The Defenders Season 1 Episodes 1 to 4 Review

I finally got the time to binge-watch The Defenders.... at least the first 4 episodes and I'm very excited to discuss them so lets dig in!
The first half of the miniseries is slow and a set up for the last half. Episode 1, "The H Word", entitle that way directly to Jessica showed us our four heroes in their own environments. Colors have always played a big rol in all four shows and it's no different here. The warm yellow for the corny Luke, purple for the cold Jessica, green for the young and confused Danny and bloody red for The Devil of Hell's kitchen.
Things have not change much since the last time we saw them. Jessica is still Jessica, denying her own heroism, drinking and secluding herself from the world. Luke is ready to move forward, Danny is chasing The Hand and... his own demons and Matt is wrestling with the abstinence of the streets. Sigourney Weaver as the head of The Hand is powerful and intimidating. Her knowledge of history and her appreciation of accuracy and traditions are a statement of her longevity in the world, though she is there mostly to enhance Elektra's story. I love Élody Yung, she just get better and better on screen.
The second episode "Mean Right Hook" is the continuation of the prologue and provided us the first two meetings between The Defenders. In the previous series, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, their stories were left far away from The Hand whiles Daredevil and Iron Fist focused their respective seasons on fighting the organization. Still the first two encounters were pairing different and with good reason. Matt and Jessica are loners who struggle with the notion of asking for help. Luke and Danny have both a super strength and are open about who they are. Watching Danny give punches to the air was fun but no more fun than Luke's face when his jaw was hit properly for the first time in a long time.
All the heroes were advised from friends to use their abilities to help the world, to be heroes in the light, all of them but Matt who everybody seems to want to keep away from the streets. Foggy found a temporary solution to his addiction that inadvertently send him straight to action and Jessica's troubling life. I said in my Daredevil profile that now that everybody knows Matt secret he is not longer isolated but The Defenders has proved me wrong, his closer friends are farther than ever.
Episode 3, "Worst Behavior" goes a few months back when we last saw the events of Daredevil season 2 but from a different perspective, Alexandra's perspective. The moment she's been waiting for so long is finally here. Black sky has fallen and is her job to bring her back to life to guide.
Black Sky, no other than Elektra herself is resurrected as we expected but not her memories. She is starting a new chapter. Her wounds came back with her, her instincts came back with her but her memories are a white canvas. She has no identity other than the one Alexandra is providing. She has been reduced to be a weapon, a tool to other's purposes and deprived of who she was or could be. As I said before this storyline is all about her and I'm glad, I wanted more of Elektra than we got in Daredevil.
But this was not the only event in this episode. Things started to move a little bit faster. Matt and Jessica played cat and mousse themselves and it was fun. Matt senses most things but Jessica is a top PI, no way to cheat on her. She was very impressed by him though.
Back to Luke and the Iron Fist, after a not so cordial introduction to each other they went for a second round and still things didn't turn out that well. Danny is naive and consumed with his mission, he haven't stop to look at what he has and what can he do with it, there are many ways to fight the enemy. And Luke is wise but very narrowed in his knowledge of what the enemy is. I like when we have 2 heroes with colliding philosophies making both valid points, it adds a plus.
Danny ended up using Luke's advice and tried a different approach to the problem but he didn't get the results he was expecting, The Hand was waiting for him and they want him... not sure for what yet. As we watched all the heroes directed into the same location, all for different reasons we finally got the promised union. Luke arrived just in time to help a very... in trouble Danny and Matt and Jessica closed the improvised team. Fights were awesome but Matt wasn't able to sense Elektra. Good news is her memories are not completely lost, she did hesitated to kill Matt as soon as he recognized her.
"Royal Dragon", episode 4 was the long awaited meeting between all the heroes. It was a get to know each other and a reunion for a couple of them. Matt seemed happy to find people with similar abilities but was ready to leave, enters Jessica who wasted no time to put 2 and 2 together. She figure it out who he was forcing him to stay.
Finn Jones said in an interview that Danny is in awe and huge admiration of all The Defenders. He is a kid in many ways and these are adults with abilities living their lives. That is admirable itself. After Stick's arrival and Jessica's abrupt departure, Danny asked Matt how could he know Jessica was leaving before it was confirmed to them. His answer was simple and great. She has a life, as little as it is, as little as Matt's or Luke's but it is a life. Not everybody is consumed with a sole mission.
There was a lot of exposition in this episode about The Hand. They use to serve the Iron Fist but they wanted more, inmortal life. We also learned why Matt can't sense Elektra... her heart is not her heart anymore, something is death there. This episode also cemented Matt's love for her, just to hear his devastation talking about her death was....
Alexandra made an attempt to win Danny to her cause but he stood his ground and stayed with the team prompting her to bring her new toy and weapon against him and his new friends. Jessica came back just in time to join the party and we were left with a cliffhanger.
Well, end of the first chapter and time to binge-watch the rest of the season. Lets hope the epilogue move faster and close with a bang!!
LOS DEFENSORES TEMPORADA 1 EPISODIOS DEL 1 AL 4
Finalmente pude ver Los Defensores.... al menos los primeros 4 episodios y estoy muy emocionada de discutirlos así que empecemos!
La primera mitad de la miniserie fue lenta y en preparación para la última mitad. El episodio 1, "La Palabra H", titulado de esa manera por Jessica nos mostró a nuestros cuatro héroes en sus propios ambientes. Los colores siempre han jugado un rol importante en los cuatro shows por lo que aquí no es diferente. El amarillo cálido para el cursi Luke, púrpura para la fría Jessica, verde para el joven y confundido Danny y el rojo sangriento para El Diablo de Hell's Kitchen.
Las cosas no han cambiado mucho desde la última vez que los vimos. Jessica sigue siendo Jessica, negando su propio heroísmo, bebiendo y apartándose del mundo. Luke está listo para seguir adelante, Danny sigue persiguiendo a The Hand y ... a sus propios demonios y Matt lucha con la abstinencia de las calles. Sigourney Weaver como la cabeza de The Hand es poderosa e intimidante. Su conocimiento histórico y su apreciación de las tradiciones son una declaración de su longevidad en el mundo, aunque su función principal en la serie es realzar la historia de Elektra. Amo a Élody Yung, se pone cada vez mejor en su interpretación.
El segundo episodio "Mean Right Hook" es la continuación del prólogo y nos proporcionó los dos primeros encuentros entre Los Defensores. En las series anteriores, las historias de Jessica Jones y Luke Cage permanecieron lejos de The Hand mientras que Daredevil y Iron Fist enfocaron sus respectivas temporadas en la lucha contra la organización. Sin embargo, los dos primeros encuentros fueron emparejados muy diferentes y con buenas razones. Matt y Jessica son solitarios que luchan con la noción de pedir ayuda. Luke y Danny tienen una super fuerza y son abiertos sobre quiénes son. Ver a Danny dar golpes al aire fue divertido, pero no más que la cara de Luke cuando su mandíbula fue golpeada correctamente por primera vez en mucho tiempo.
Todos los héroes fueron aconsejados por amigos a usar sus habilidades para ayudar al mundo, a ser héroes en la luz, todos menos Matt, quién todos parecen querer mantener alejado de las calles. Foggy encontró una solución temporal que inadvertidamente lo envió directamente a la acción y a la problemática vida de Jessica. Dije en mi perfil de Daredevil que ahora que todos saben el secreto de Matt ya no está aislado, pero Los Defensores ha demostrado lo contrario, sus amigos más cercanos están más lejos que nunca.
Episodio 3, "Worst Behavior" se remonta unos meses atrás cuando vimos por última vez los eventos de Daredevil temporada 2, pero desde una perspectiva diferente, la perspectiva de Alexandra. El momento que ha estado esperando por tanto tiempo finalmente está aquí. The Black Sky ha caído y es su trabajo traerla de nuevo a la vida y guiarla.
Black Sky, no es otra que Elektra quién resucitó como esperábamos, pero no sus recuerdos. Está empezando un nuevo capítulo. Sus heridas volvieron con ella, sus instintos volvieron con ella, pero sus recuerdos son un lienzo en blanco. No tiene otra identidad que la que Alexandra le está proporcionando. Se le ha reducido a ser un arma, una herramienta para los propósitos de otros y privada de lo que es o podría ser. Como dije antes esta historia es sobre Elektra y me alegra, quería ver más de ella después de Daredevil.
Pero este no fue el único evento en el episodio. Las cosas comenzaron a moverse un poco más rápido. Matt y Jessica jugaron al gato y al ratón y fue divertido. Matt puede percibir la mayoría de las cosas, pero Jessica es una top PI, no hay manera de engañarla. Sin embargo, quedó muy impresionada con él.
De regreso a Luke y a Iron Fist, después de una introducción no tan cordial pasaron a una segunda ronda y aún así las cosas no resultaron muy bien. Danny es ingenuo y está consumido por su misión, no se ha detenido a mirar lo que tiene y lo qué puede hacer con ello, hay muchas maneras de luchar contra el enemigo. Luke es sabio pero su conocimiento del enemigo y la extensión del mismo es estrecho. Me gusta cuando tenemos 2 héroes con filosofías distintas y puntos válidos, añaden un plus.
Danny tomó el consejo de Luke y trató un enfoque diferente al problema, pero no obtuvo los resultados queridos, The Hand lo esperaba y lo quieren ... aún no estoy segura con cuál propósito. Mientras veíamos a todos los héroes dirigirse al mismo lugar, todos por diferentes razones finalmente obtuvimos la unión prometida. Luke llegó justo a tiempo para ayudar a un muy ... en problemas Danny y Matt y Jessica cerraron el improvisado equipo. Las peleas fueron impresionantes, pero Matt no pudo percibir a Elektra. La buena noticia es que sus recuerdos no están completamente perdidos, dudó en matar a Matt tan pronto como él la reconoció.
"Royal Dragon", el episodio 4 fue el esperado encuentro entre todos los héroes. Fue un conozcámonos un poco y un reencuentro para algunos. Matt parecía feliz de encontrar personas con habilidades similares a las suyas pero aún así estaba listo para irse, pero a Jessica no perdió el tiempo y puso 2 y 2 juntos, reconoció quién era forzándolo a quedarse.
Finn Jones dijo en una entrevista que Danny está en awe y tiene una gran admiración por todos Los Defensores. Él es un niño de muchas maneras y estos son adultos con habilidades que viven sus vidas. Es admirable. Después de la llegada de Stick y la abrupta salida de Jessica, Danny le preguntó a Matt cómo pudo saber que Jessica los estaba abandonando antes de que se les confirmara. Su respuesta fue simple y concisa. Ella tiene una vida, tan pequeña como es, tan pequeña como la de Matt o Luke, pero es una vida. No todos están en una misión por salvar al mundo.
Hubo mucha exposición en este episodio sobre The Hand. Ellos solían servir al Iron Fist, pero quisieron más, una vida inmortal. También aprendimos por qué Matt no puede percibir a Elektra ... su corazón ya no es su corazón, algo está muerto allí. Este episodio también cimentó el amor de Matt por ella, sólo escuchar su devastación al hablar de su muerte fue ....
Alexandra hizo un intento por ganarse a Danny pero este se mantuvo firme y se quedó con el equipo lo cual la propició a traer su nuevo juguete y arma preferida contra él y Los Defensores. Jessica regresó justo a tiempo para unirse a la fiesta y nos quedamos con un cliffhanger.
Bueno, es el final de la primera parte y tiempo de ver el resto de la temporada. ¡Esperemos que el epílogo se mueva más rápido y cierre con una explosión!
